About the University of Johannesburg

As a result of a merger between the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR), and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University, the University of Johannesburg came into existence on 1 January 2005.

Out of the 26 public universities that make up the higher education system, the newly founded institution is one of the largest comprehensive communication universities in South Africa.

UJ has a student population of over 50,000, of which over 3,000 are students from 80 countries worldwide.

The challenge

University of Johannesburg

“As is the case in many parts of the world, South Africans are currently experiencing elements of a state of national lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is without a doubt a defining global crisis of our time and the most significant challenge we have faced in a long time. Higher Education, like many other sectors, is reeling under the impact of the disease, which has caused unprecedented decisions, including the conferral of qualifications in absentia for the autumn and winter set of graduation ceremonies.” – Prof Kinta Burger

Using Digital Certificates, the University of Johannesburg has been able to issue its graduates with secure electronic certificates that can be viewed and shared via a secure web portal anytime, anywhere, on any device. Thus, further supporting their virtual graduation ceremony enables family, friends, and graduates to celebrate their hard work and achievements.

University of Johannesburg’s experience

Using our solutions

“The Digital Certificate system provided by Advanced Secure Technologies has been introduced at UJ because of a need to increase security features related to the certification processes. Not only does this digital system offer graduates access to their awarded certification credentials securely and electronically, but it also gives the graduates access to share their electronic degree certificates for verification purposes with third parties or prospective employers, at no cost to both parties.

Using Digital Certificates the University of Johannesburg has recently issued our degree certificates in a secure and streamlined digital process during these challenging times. In 1 day, we had 1200 graduates register online to securely access their electronic degree documents – fully supporting our virtual graduation ceremonies and helping us in honoring our graduates with their well-deserved secure eCertifcates.”

Says the Senior Director of Central Academic Administration at the University of Johannesburg, Dr. Tinus van Zyl.
